Bouska, Batayola File National Letters of Intent
Oregon St. Softball coach Kirk Walker advised Wednesday that the Beavers have signed two northwest players, Hannah Bouska and Isabelle Batayola, to National Letters of Intent during the early season signing period for the 2011 season.
Bouska is from McNary High School in Keizer, while Batayola comes from Roosevelt High School in Seattle, Washington. Batayola has also played for the Beaverton based Northwest Blaze ASA 16A team.
"Both Hannah and Izzy are tremendous athletes who have dynamic and explosive skills. It is always exciting to add great athletes from the Northwest that have Pac-10 level playing skills," according to Walker.

Beaverton Based Team Takes Title
The Beaverton based Northwest Blaze 16U ASA softball team captured the national championship this past Sunday evening in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The Blaze came from two runs down in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat the Arizona Killer Bees 5-4, on a walk-off three run home run by Kaitlin Inglesby.
Inglesby, who plays for the Central Catholic Rams, also picked up the win, pitching in relief for the second time of the day over the Killer Bees, in the double elimination tournament. It was the second consecutive 5-4 win for the Blaze over the Killer Bees.

Comets Repell Crimson Tide For a Third Time
5A resembles 3A in that since redistricting, only two teams have made the trip to OSU for the title game. The Crater Comets (17-12, 10-2), champions of the Southern Sky, and fifth ranked in the last coaches' poll of the year, seek their third title game win against the top ranked Glencoe Crimson Tide (28-2, 20-1), three time champions of the NorthWest Oregon Conference.
Two years ago, Crater built a 7-1 lead, and held off Glencoe's comeback, while last season, it was the Crimson Tide that took a 2-1 lead into the sixth inning, before the Comets rallied.

(Only) 6A Sure to See a New Champion, But It Turns Out To Be An Old One

6A is the only class that does not have a team back from last year's title game. There is a familiar program, though, as well as a fresh face. The North Medford Black Tornado (25-5, 11-4 in the Southwest Conference) makes their sixth appearance in the title game, while the Sunset Apollos (24-6, 12-3 in the Metro League) are there for the first time.
Both teams are second seeds, and won four playoff games to reach the title. Sunset beat a pair of league champions, and North Medford three.

Spartans Find Second Title Against Hornets
Marist and Henley open Saturday's action with another championship game rematch. Last year, the Spartans needed 10 innings to get a 1-0 win over the Hornets, and all season long, the Spartans, also ranked 23rd. in the national USA Today poll, have been ranked #1 in 4A. The Hornets have been right on their heels, ranked #2.
The game is also a rematch of last year's pitching duel, as Marist's senior Nyree White, the co-player of the year in the SkyEm, again faces Henley junior Autumn Wedan, a first team Skyline selection pitcher. The duo combined for 32 strikeouts in last year's classic showdown.

Valley Catholic and Willamina Renew Rivalry; VC Eeks Out Another Title
Since realignment for the 2006-07 school year dropped Valley Catholic into 3A, and the already tough West Valley League, the state championship game has been the private property of the Valiants and the Willamina Bulldogs, who are meeting for the title for the third year in a row.
Roni Illias' Valley Catholic Valiants (23-3, 14-0 in the WVL) have lost only once in state this year, to 4A Gladstone, who reached the 4A semifinals. The Valiants other losses came against larger California schools in the Redding tournament during spring break.
Brad Chewning's Willamina Bulldogs (24-6, 12-2), the second seed from the WVL, suffered half their losses to 4A teams, and the rest to Valley Catholic.

Irrigon Knights' First Trip A 1-0 Success in all NE Game
But for the opportunity to play in a PAC-10 facility, it would be more convenient to play the 2A/1A Softball championship game in Pendleton. Certainly it would result in more local fans in attendance for the two teams from rural Northeast Oregon, and a lot less mud and rain.
The game also serves as proof that the expanded playoffs compared to years ago are not a series of exhibitions that don't really affect the championship, as both teams were third seeds.

Another All-West Valley 3A Title Game Coming
Willamina jumped ahead of Regis early, and after the Rams had tied the game in the fourth inning, the Bulldogs came right back with a four run fifth at bat, and pulled away to a 5-2 win on the Rams' home field.
Coupled with Valley Catholic's 5-4 comeback win over Rainier, it sets up for the third year in a row a showdown between the two West Valley league powers at Oregon State for the 3A softball state championship. And a scheduling quandary for the Bulldog faithful, given the Willamina baseball team will also be playing Friday, against yet another West Valley school, at Volcanoes' stadium in Keizer, for the 3A baseball championship.
Willamina won a tight 4-3 game over Grant Union to earn a fourth shot this season at Westside Christian of Lake Oswego. The Eagles, who rolled past Vale 10-0, have handled Willamina on the 90 foot diamond in all three meetings this year, similar to Valley Catholic's three game sweep on the 60 foot softball field.

A very warm spring afternoon was the backdrop for an exciting 2009 3A state quarterfinal game in Rainier. A highly anticipated showdown between pitchers Raeanne Hanks of Rainier and Molly Hockema of Gold Beach was all that it was hyped to be. Hanks fired a 3 hit gem, finishing with 11 strikeouts, 4 walks, and 1 hit batter. Hockema countered with a 5 hit dandy, gathering 6 strikeouts and an impressive 0 walks. The difference was that Rainier has a Mollee of their own, and she had Raeanne's back. Her 2 run shot over the center field fence in the 3rd inning put Rainier ahead for good, and from her shortstop position she had 3 heart-stopping grounders for outs in the last 2 innings - including the final out of the game.
