Spartans Replace GP at #22

Marist moved into the #22 spot in the USA Today/NFCA High School Top 25, released last Thursday by the NFCA, though the stay may be short, following Monday's 9-8 non-conference loss to the visiting Newport Cubs, which ended the Spartans' winning streak at 41 games.

The Spartans replaced Grants Pass, who still received votes, but dropped out of the top 25 after news of a pair of losses, 6-1 and 4-3, in an April 11 home doubleheader against McMinnville made its way across the country.

Sheldon (Calif.) maintained the top spot behind a 15-strikeout performance from Jolene Henderson, as the Huskies beat Woodland 8-0 in their only contest of the week.

Elsewhere, undefeated Klein Oak (Texas) is in second place, with Naples (Florida), Norco (California) and Alexander Central (North Carolina), who all had perfect weeks, combining to win ten games, continuing to round out the top five.

Archbishop Mitty moves into sixth, after beating Freedom (California) 2-0, who is now in tenth. A two-run double by Shea Williams scored the only runs in that Bay Area showdown.

Records for this week's poll include all games played through April 5, 2009. The poll is compiled by state representatives from across the country. Among the criteria considered are a school's strength of schedule, the quality of competition in its state or league, and the quality of its players.
