Dallas wrestler Charlie Engelfried, 17, collapsed and died shortly after winning his match in the 285 lb. weight class Thursday night in Silverton. Engelfried, a junior, shook his coaches’ hand after pinning his opponent, but then collapsed walking off the mat.
Engelfried, shown from his Facebook page, was transported to Silverton Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. As the cause of his collapse was not apparent, an autopsy was conducted. The results weren't released to the media until relatives spoke with deputy state medical examiner Dr. Larry Lewman.
Grief counselors were on hand at both Dallas and Silverton High Schools on Friday morning.
Englefried also played center for the Dragons' football team, and was listed at 6'0", 260 lbs. on the football roster.
UPDATE
Engelfried died of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, Lewan announced this afternoon.
Lewman, who performed the autopsy, explained that the disease is a thickening of the heart muscle, which causes a rhythmic disturbance. Victims typically collapse and die very suddenly, when their system runs out of circulating fresh blood.
"The heart goes out of rhythm, and victims just collapse and die very suddenly. We see a couple of cases of this a year. It's usually what it is when a young person dies unexpectedly," according to Lewman.
